Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Problem

Don’t wait for signs to appear

CKDMany patients will not experience symptoms of Chronic Kidney Problem /CKD until it has progressed to stage 2 or stage 3. And, when sympto
ms do appear, it can be hard to pinpoint the cause because kidney disease affects so many body systems.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1996–2006 survey, less than 5% of people with symptoms of stage 1 or stage 2 (mild disease) chronic kidney disease (CKD) reported being aware of having the disease; of those with stage 3 CKD (moderate disease), awareness was only about 7.5%, and for stage 4 (severe disease), awareness was still only about 40%.6

General symptoms of CKD

  • Fatigue, weakness, lack of energy, and pale skin due to anemia
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Fluid retention, swelling around legs and eyes
  • Itching
  • Headaches
  • Numbness in the feet or hands due to peripheral neuropathy
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Altered mental status
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Chest pain due to inflammation around the heart
  • Shortness of breath from fluid in the lungs
  • Easy bruising, bleeding, and poor blood clotting
  • Bone pain and fractures
  • Decreased sexual interest and erectile dysfunction
  • Change in energy level or strength
  • Lightheadedness

In order to determine whether these symptoms are related to Chronic Kidney Problem / Disease (CKD), a doctor will most likely order blood testing that includes measurement of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine and a 24-hour urine collection (for assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR)). If Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is suspected, your doctor will perform these tests periodically in order to diagnose Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) early and track progress. This is especially true if a patient has diabetes, high blood pressure, or metabolic syndrome. Remember, the earlier Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is identified, the sooner patients can start developing habits to maintain kidney function and take probiotics that will provide the best chance to be healthy into the future.

Chronic Kidney Problem or Disease (CKD) is a multi-system disease that causes chemical disturbances, which can affect various body systems. For example:

  • Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea) and at times gastrointestinal bleeding
